The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) is pleased to announce that the International World Games Association (IWGA) has named Team USA as the “Team of the Year” for its performance in the 2013 Flying Disc competition. Team USA had secured the Gold Medal for the mixed gender Ultimate event in the 2013 World Games for a third consecutive time, also winning in the World Games in 2009 in Kaohsiung (TPE) and in 2005 in Duisburg (GER). Team USA had bested Australia in last year’s championship finals in Cali, Colombia.
“This award is a huge confirmation of the success of the 2013 World Games Ultimate competition, which electrified the 45,000 spectators during our three day event in the Pascual Guerrero Olympic Stadium in Cali,” commented WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “The outstanding performance of Team USA is recognized by this prestigious IWGA award. We want to thank the flying disc sports community for showing their tremendous support through our mobilization of social media, and also all the other sports fans around the globe who voted recently and who made us the most watched sport in the video-streaming during last year’s Games.” WFDF and our flying disc athletes are enthusiastically looking forward to the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw, Poland.”
The voting process for this first ever IWGA “Team of the Year” award for 2013 was held on the IWGA web site and promoted through social media throughout the month of January and was an open vote by the respective sports’ enthusiasts and the global sports community. The women’s gold medal Tug of War team from Chinese Taipei came in second with 13,945 votes, while the mixed gender team in Korfball from the Netherlands was in third place with 3,574 votes. There were a total of 10 teams considered, with the balance of the teams representing seven other World Games sports (in voting order): Beach Handball, Fistball, Ju Jitsu, Dancesport, Rugby, Softball, and Gymnastics.
