Estonia Regain Gold at the WFDF 2024 World Team Disc Golf Championship

After a busy four days of Disc Golf with 364 rounds of match play at the Mundaring Disc Golf Venue in the Perth Hills of Western Australia from 6th-9th November, Estonia defended their title of World Champion with their back to back gold medal win against home country Team Australia. Team Canada edged out Norway to take the Bronze. In celebration of Spirit of the Game, Team New Zealand won the Spirit Award who was a clear leader in the points collection from their opponents in rules, fairness and behavior. The full final rankings can be found here.

There were a total of 23 countries competing in the event, consisting of teams of 6-12 mixed gender and aged players. Match Play is a unique and exciting format in Disc Golf that emphasizes head-to-head competition with both doubles and singles heading out to holes for points. This format enables teams to win points on each hole, rather than counting the total number of throws for the total match. Teams must carefully choose their players for each match, submitting rosters for both pairs and singles per match.

WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch noted that “this is the first WFDF World Team Disc Golf Championship in the southern hemisphere and we were delighted to have teams from 14 European countries and two from North America making the long trip to participate, in addition to seeing some Asian countries participating for the first time. We are really excited to have Disc Golf back on The World Games program and to now have the 16 teams finalized for the competition next August in Chengdu.”

The Local Organising Committee, headed by WFDF’s Disc Golf Committee member Sue Summers and co-tournament Director Ken Summers, were supported by the venue hosts Mundaring Sports Club and their Disc Golf members as well as the WFDF Disc Golf Committee headed by Charlie Mead.

The home crowd advantage helped Australia finish with Silver, well above their seed of 8th, especially after their lead female player was injured during the practice days prior to the tournament and was sidelined from the event. One of the highest seeds Team Finland lost in a heartbreaking tiebreaker in the round of 16 that dropped them out of the quarterfinals in losing to Canada.

The event was the final points contributor to the Disc Golf World Rankings which are used to select the 15 countries that will join hosts People’s Republic of China at the World Games in Chengdu in August 2025 where Disc Golf makes its return to the sports program since its debut there in 2001 in Akita, Japan. The Invited teams (in ranking order) are: Estonia, Finland, Canada, USA, Austria, Australia, Germany, Czechia, Great Britain, Norway, France, Japan, People’s Republic of China, Slovakia, Latvia, and New Zealand.

The event for National Teams Disc Golf is in its fifth edition with the event first taking place on Grouse Mountain in Canada in 2016. No other country has been successful in defending their title until Estonia this year, who were steady match-to-match and ended the tournament with 30 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss across the whole tournament. The next WFDF World Team Disc Golf Championship will be hosted in Lithuania in Vilnius in August 2026.
