The World Flying Disc Federation proudly celebrates Kristin Lätt of Estonia, who claimed second place in the prestigious IWGA Athlete of the Year 2024 award, closing with 51,338 votes. The contest is held each January for the previous year. The next edition of The World Games will be held 7-17 August in Chengdu, China and will feature both Disc Golf and Ultimate.
In 2024, Kristin claimed victory in seven Disc Golf Pro Tour events, including defending her European Open title, and she remains the highest-rated female disc golfer worldwide. This 2024 performance follows an extraordinary 2023 season for the Estonian, where she became the first woman to achieve the Grand Slam by winning all four major tournaments in a single season. She secured her second World Championship title, her first European Championship title, and was awarded the Elaine King Player of the Year award, winning 12 high-level tournaments.
Reflecting on this honor, Kristin Lätt said”I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported me throughout this journey. Seeing the Disc Golf and Flying Disc community come together like this has been truly special. This recognition is not just about me—it’s about our sport, our fans, and the future we are building together. Thank you for being part of this incredible experience!“
“On behalf of the global Flying Disc community, I’d like to wholeheartedly congratulate Kristin Lätt of Estonia on this magnificent achievement,” Stated WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “This is incredible recognition for Kristin as a stand-out athlete over the last several years and for her many accomplishments in women’s disc golf. It is particularly exciting for us as we will be reintroducing disc golf this summer on The World Games programme after 24 years since it was last a medal sport. We give our sincerest thanks to all our frisbee fans who voted for Kristin over the last month and we look forward to seeing everyone in Chengdu.”
David Berglund, CEO, Latitude 64° (Lätt’s sponsor), noted: “We are incredibly proud of Kristin for her remarkable achievement in earning a spot on the podium for The World Games Athlete of the Year 2024 awards. This recognition elevates the entire sport and serves as a powerful example of the potential disc golf has to grow and thrive on the world stage. We’re excited to see how this milestone will continue to inspire both existing and future players.”
For 2024, Veddriq Leonardo (Indonesia) of Sport Climbing was named IWGA Athlete of the Year with 77,045 votes in the final round, and Xin Tong (China) of Wushu came in third with 26,181 votes. The candidates were nominated by their respective federations. The fan voting process began the 7th of January with 18 candidates. After a first round of voting, the 10 best athletes went into the finals round starting on January 22. The winner, together with second and third place finishers, will receive a trophy as well as a certificate.
We appreciate the collective effort of the entire Flying Disc community, spanning across all disciplines: Disc Golf, Ultimate, Beach Ultimate, Guts, Freestyle, and Overall to lift Kristin to this incredible honor. The outpouring of votes, messages, and support showed just how much we stand behind our athletes and how powerful this sport’s presence has become.
Flying disc athletes last won the IWGA honor for 2023 contest (for 2022 performance), with Valeria Cardenas from Colombia securing the individual title and Team Germany winning the (now-discontinued) team title.
