WFDF Congress Approves Cameroon and the Maldives as National Federation Members

The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) is proud to announce that its Congress has approved Cameroon and the Maldives as the newest national federations to achieve WFDF membership. With these additions, WFDF’s global membership now expands to 113 National Federations, with 20 member federations in Africa and 28 in Asia.

“The continued expansion of Flying Disc sports globally is a core component of our mission, in addition to broadening the community in countries that are already members,” said WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “We are delighted to welcome these new members to WFDF, and are proud of the ongoing sport development efforts they represent, particularly in Africa and southern Asia.”

In Cameroon, flying disc was initially played by a small group of expatriates, but interest declined when the COVID-19 pandemic put activities on hold. The sport’s revival came through social media, inspiring a group of friends to start playing. Their enthusiasm soon spread to schools and local clubs, leading to the formal establishment of the Fédération Camerounaise de Frisbee.

“Becoming the National Federation recognized by the WFDF means a lot to the Flying Disc Sports community in Cameroon, targeting the inclusion of players from all backgrounds without distinction,” said Eric Onana, President of the Fédération Camerounaise de Frisbee. “Given the commitment of the local athletes who have been asking me every day about our membership process with WFDF, I am confident that, in the years to come, Flying Disc will be a hit. We are committed to provide the necessary support and expect we will attract high-caliber athletes because our development plan is to target the ‘grass roots.’ As we often say, “impossible is not Cameroonian.” I take this opportunity to thank WFDF for the welcome and all the help provided in the membership process.”

Flying Disc Sports gained momentum in the Maldives when participants returning from studying abroad introduced the game to their home country. Interest spiked further in 2019 after American Ultimate player and YouTuber Marques Brownlee featured the sport online. Initially a way to stay connected, the game quickly attracted players across Malé, Fuvahmulah, and Addu, culminating in the formal establishment of the Maldives Flying Disc Federation in 2024.

“We are incredibly honored to officially become part of the World Flying Disc Federation. This is a significant milestone for us, and with the support from WFDF, we hope to continue to promote the sport and its values across the Maldives, inspire more participation, build stronger communities, and positively influence lives through the dynamic and inclusive world of flying disc sports. Our family here continues to grow with each passing day, and we feel eager to take this revolution to new heights!” said Uraiba Asif, President of the Maldives Flying Disc Federation.
