Chengdu, China – August 2025 — The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) is proud to announce the results of the Ultimate competition at The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, China. In a spectacular finale capping the five day event at the beautiful stadium at Chengdu Sport University, Team USA captured the gold medal in the mixed-gender Ultimate event, edging out Canada who secured silver, while France celebrated bronze on the podium. Germany was selected as the unofficial Spirit winner in the peer voting.
The final match between the United States and Canada on the 17th of August delivered an electrifying come-from-behind 13–12 “universe-point” finish, keeping fans in Chengdu and across the globe on the edge of their seats. France’s determined run capped a memorable tournament as they edged out a scrappy German squad, highlighting the strength and depth of Ultimate worldwide.
In his opening remarks at the Games, WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch welcomed athletes, teams, and fans, underlining the unique value of Flying Disc sports: “The World Games are the highlight of the WFDF Flying Disc quadrennial event calendar, showcasing skill, strategy, and spirit at the highest level. The 2025 World Games mark another milestone in WFDF’s ongoing mission to promote Flying Disc sports across the globe. With over 118 member nations now represented, the inclusion of both Ultimate and Disc Golf at Chengdu 2025 underscores the spirit of collaboration, growth, and international unity that define WFDF’s vision.
The excitement of the last 10 days was dampened by the announcement that WFDF’s long-time Secretary General, Volker Bernardi, had passed away on the 17th of August after a sudden, brief illness. Volker loved The World Games, serving as a member of the Executive Committee of the International World Games Association (IWGA) since 2018. Rauch commented that “Volker was not only a trusted colleague and a driving force in the professionalization of WFDF, but also a dear friend to so many of us. His deep knowledge, wise counsel, and unwavering commitment to integrity in sport left a lasting mark on our federation and the entire flying disc community. On behalf of WFDF, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues across the world of sport. His absence will be felt profoundly, but his legacy will continue to guide our work and inspire us.”
