The WFDF 2025 All Africa Ultimate Championship (AAUC) concluded at the Kampala International School (KISU) Fields in Kampala this last weekend, marking a high point in African flying disc competition. Held from 9 to 12 October, the tournament drew 240 athletes across 13 teams, the largest turnout in AAUC history. Over four days of spirited competition, players and teams from Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, The Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda battled in mixed-gender format matches.
It was an all-Kenyan sweep on the competition side. Kakamega Wolves (Kenya) took the gold medal against Kaimosi Friends University (formerly, the Tropical Rangers, of Kenya), with Black Fish Ultimate (Kenya) — the champions in 2023 — winning bronze. Kenya’s Masters team was awarded Most Spirited Team for exemplifying the highest spirit-of-the-game conduct across all matches.
“We continued to be inspired by the organic growth and development of Flying Disc sports in Africa,” stated WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “This is the ‘Year of Africa’ for WFDF and we are excited to see the steady progression of the athletic talent and participation with this latest All-African Ultimate Championship, as we welcomed our 25th national federation from Africa just this week. On behalf of WFDF, I want to thank the Uganda National Council of Sports (UNCS) for their support and tournament director Dr. Jane Gakuru and her staff and volunteers for hosting this successful event.”
Phena Odoya from Kakamega Wolves (Kenya) won the Most Spirited–Female Player on this year’s edition. After a very tight battle paired with Phiona Mbwali from Impala Frisbee Club (Uganda), which had to be decided by the total number of assists, since both competitors had the same votes (4) and the same number of goals (9). Shafik Walwasa from Vikings Frisbee Club (Uganda) was the winner of this year’s Most Spirited-Male player. Ayaka Ogata from Cape to Cairo Club (Egypt/South Africa), was awarded Most Valuable-Female Player, voted 5 times, had 22 goals and made 8 assists. Hussein Alunzi from Vikings Frisbee Club (Uganda) got 8 votes, with 3 goals and made 32 assists, awarded as the Most Valuable-Male Player.
The comparison with the AAUC 2023 edition (held in Kisumu, Kenya) underscores a trend, with a much more international and diversified roster’s composition. This reflects cross-border recruitment and the current sport’s growing presence with 25 member countries in Africa.
“Standing here today, looking around at all of you-the teams, the spirit, the laughter, the energy. I can confidently say that the future of African Ultimate is brighter than ever,” said WFDF Board Secretary Executive Committee Member Cathy Nakasi (Uganda). Tournament Director Dr. Jane Gakuru added, “We are grateful to all teams, officials, and volunteers. The heights reached over these four days speak to the passion and potential of African Ultimate.”
WFDF recognizes the Uganda National Council of Sports (UNCS) support in granting clearance through the Uganda Flying Disc Association (UFDA) to host the Championship. Special appreciation goes to all sponsors and partners whose support continues to drive the growth of Flying Disc sports across Africa. WFDF, the All Africa Flying Disc Federation (AAFDF), and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) were joined by leaders and partners at the AAUC 2025 closing ceremony. WFDF President, Robert “Nob” Rauch, and WFDF Director of Membership and sports Development, Dillon Richardson, shared video messages. WFDF Board Secretary, Catherine Nakasi (Uganda) offered heartfelt closing remarks, in which she expressed her gratitude towards all athletes and LOC team for organizing an amazing tournament in which sportsmanship and spirit of the game was shown by all involved both on and off the field.
The 2025 AAUC has delivered on both the competitive and cultural promises of the sport. Driving forward sportsmanship, fair play, and athletic excellence. Plans are underway to build on this foundation at the regional and global levels in the coming cycle.
