The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF), in partnership with the Portuguese Flying Disc Association (APUDD), the Clube de Praticantes Ultimate Portimão (Local Organising Committee – LOC), and the Municipality of Portimão, commenced the WFDF 2025 World Beach Ultimate Championships (WBUC) this Sunday, 16 November 2025, at Praia da Rocha, one of Portugal’s most iconic beach destinations.
This seven-day world championship event welcomes 136 teams from 38 countries, spread across 10 divisions, bringing together over 2,500 participants to celebrate elite-level Beach Ultimate, friendship, and the Spirit of the Game. The competition will run through Saturday the 22nd of November, culminating in the finals and medal ceremonies. Divisions of play will include Mixed, Women’s, Open, Master Mixed, Master Open, Master Women’s, Grand Master Mixed, Grand Master Open, Grand Master Women’s and Great Grand Master Open.
“Beach Ultimate blends athleticism with beach culture in a compact, thrilling format that showcases the core values of Ultimate — spirit, gender equality, community, inclusivity, sustainability, and fun,” said WFDF President Robert ‘Nob’ Rauch. “The WBUC is a great opportunity for the top players across the global Beach Ultimate community to come together and compete not only for competitive glory but also to celebrate the spirit and fun that define our sport. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the Municipality of Portimão and all event partners and sponsors for their continued support.”
WBUC Tournament Director Pedro Vargas commented that “The Clube de Praticantes Ultimate Portimão is excited to see the return of the most prestigious Beach Ultimate Championship to Portugal. A lot of the sport of Beach Ultimate got its roots in Portugal, and it seems fitting that, 21 years after the first World Beach Ultimate Championships, the WBUC is coming back home. Praia da Rocha is the ideal beach venue for the sport at the highest level, and we have the capacity to run an extremely well-organized and highly successful tournament that will showcase Beach Ultimate at its best.”
While the Parade of Nations and Opening Ceremony were cancelled due to adverse weather, the opening game on this first day of competition gave everyone a taste of what is to come all week. In a mixed division matchup, Japan edged out host Portugal in a nailbiter at universe point, 10-9.
Spectators around the world will be able to follow the action at WBUC 2025 through WFDF’s broadcast partnership with Ultiworld. Nearly 140 matches will be streamed live and made available on-demand, covering all stages of competition. From pool play to elimination rounds and medal matches. In addition, at least one free-to-watch game will be streamed daily on Ultiworld’s YouTube channel, including select semifinals and finals. WFDF will also host a Beach Ultimate 4s Showcase Game at noon on the finals day, continuing the trend from recent international Beach Ultimate events. This 4-on-4 mixed-gender format, played with 8-player rosters on a smaller field, is designed for faster-paced games, smaller team sizes, and the ability to share venues with other sports. WFDF is testing this format for use in multi-sports games where athlete quota size is a key constraint or for other situations where venue access may be limited.
As in previous years, WFDF’s partners at the Olympic Channel will carry the Mixed, Open, and Women’s Semifinals, Finals, and for the first time, the Ultimate 4s competitions, beginning 72 hours after the tournament’s conclusion, on olympics.com.
