Education is Paramount: WFDF Champions Clean Sport Through Comprehensive Learning

With the conclusion of World Anti-Doping Agency’s 2025 World Conference on Doping in Sport in Busan, the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) will use this moment to comment on its activities in promoting clean sport. WFDF’s approach is founded on a core belief that preventing doping is best achieved by empowering every stakeholder with knowledge, and therefore we have established education and effective communication as the foremost pillars of our anti-doping strategy.

WFDF wholeheartedly embodies WADA’s guiding mantra that “an Athlete’s first experience with anti-doping should be through education rather than Doping Control.” This strategic focus ensures that athletes and support personnel understand the rules, their responsibilities, and the values of integrity before they ever step onto the international stage.

“Clean sport is non-negotiable for WFDF. Self-refereeing is at the center of the approach our athletes take on the field of competition, which by definition requires knowing the rules,” stated WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “Under the Spirit of the Game, our athletes are expected to play with integrity, and that involves not only abiding by the rules of the game but also the anti-doping rules. Our strong investment in mandatory education and robust communication is not just about compliance, it’s about ensuring that every athlete has the tools to be empowered to compete clean.”

As part of the WFDF’s Anti-Doping Education Plan, the federation leverages the global standards and tools provided by WADA, including the Anti-Doping Education and Learning platform (ADEL). All athletes, coaches, and medical staff participating in WFDF Championships are required to complete the WADA ADEL International Level Anti-Doping Course for their respective roles, successfully pass its evaluation, and submit the certificate as part of the event registration process.

“We wholeheartedly embrace the principle that an athlete’s first experience with anti-doping must be through education, not testing,” explained Dr. Florian Beiglböck, WFDF Medical and Anti-Doping Chair. “The requirement for all participants, from athletes to medical staff, to complete the ADEL courses before competition ensures our entire sporting community is aware of their rights and responsibilities under the Code, making them active partners in the fight for clean sport.”

WFDF encourages the wider Flying Disc Sports community, athletes, coaches, parents and others to register on ADEL and complete the various courses. In 2025, over 6,500 participants at various levels of the sport completed ADEL courses.

The Anti-Doping webpage on the WFDF website acts as a centralized area for stakeholders in accessing key information such as the WFDF Anti-Doping Rules, the athletes’ rights and responsibilities, the Therapeutic Use Exemption Process and other important resources. WFDF also promotes webinars and other educational resources offered by WADA and the International Testing Agency, who support WFDF’s Anti-Doping Program. Through a committed “education first” strategy, WFDF is ensuring Flying Disc Sports are defined by fair play and the highest standards of integrity.
