The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) proudly celebrates the conclusion of the Ultimate competition at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand, marking a historic milestone as Flying Disc sports were featured for the first time as a demonstration sport in a full Olympic Movement multi-sports event.
In a thrilling final, the Philippines earned the gold medal with a 9 – 7 time-capped victory over top-seeded Singapore, delivering a dramatic last possession that will be remembered as a landmark moment for the whole Ultimate community. Malaysia secured the bronze with a 12 – 7 victory over Thailand, the host nation, which was honored with the Spirit of the Game Award for their outstanding sportsmanship.
“From WFDF’s perspective, this is the first time any Flying Disc discipline has been included in a full-scale Olympic Movement multi-sport event,” said WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “Everything we’re doing is aimed at creating more opportunities and recognition for the sport and its athletes. This event is a major step. We’ve already seen results; Indonesia, for example, has secured recognition from its National Olympic Committee, which opens access to funding and visibility. We expect another key milestone next year with Flying Disc being featured at the Mediterranean Games in Italy, and we hope to return to the SEA Games when hosted in Malaysia in 2027.”
“We strongly encourage all our National Federations to build and strengthen relationships with their respective NOCs and Sports Ministries. As we’ve seen in the Philippines, NOCs engagement can directly support the growth of the sport and open doors for international participation,” added Rauch.
The Southeast Asian Games, commonly known as the SEA Games, is a biennial multi-sport event involving participants from the current 11 countries of Southeast Asia. The games are under the regulation of the Southeast Asian Games Federation with supervision by the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia. In this year’s edition, there are 574 events over 38 medal sports, involving over 9,300 athletes from 10 countries. The SEA Games were first held in 1959, and the next edition will be staged in Malaysia in September 2027.
All Ultimate matches from SEA Games Thailand 2025 were livestreamed on WFDF’s YouTube channel, where VOD replays remain available for viewing. Disc Golf coverage will continue through the conclusion of the competition on 18 December.
