WFDF’s International Spirit of the Game Day (#iSOTGDay) is scheduled for May 10, with celebrations happening anytime between May 10–16. This year’s topic is “Spirit Beyond Sports (#SpiritBeyondSports): How has SOTG made YOU a better person?”
We would like to ask our community to reflect and share how SOTG has not just affected you in the game, but how it ripples out into your athletic team environment, career and life. We believe SOTG is central to flying disc sports and a powerful tool helping us all to realise our agency co-creating our human experience by giving us responsibility. And with great responsibility comes great power.
For 2026 the WFDF SOTG Commission is planning to organise a livestreamed and recorded webinar discussing Spirit Beyond Sports with well-known athletes and organisers from the various disc disciplines. Specific details such as time and place will be announced on the WFDF News and social media channels later. If you believe you have an interesting perspective or story to share, or know somebody that would be great on the panel, please suggest via this form.
In addition, we want to encourage our partners, national federations and other communities to organise community events to celebrate SOTG.
“Spirit of the Game’s value holds significance across all Flying Disc sports and in a wide range of contexts beyond them,” stated WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “It unites players worldwide in their shared commitment to fairness and the pure joy of playing, and works because of the implied moral imperative instead of a reliance on the calculus of penalties vs. rewards.”
Spirit of the Game Commission Chair Wolfgang Maehr added, “This year, we hope that May 10 and the days after are filled with athletes and practitioners around the globe focusing on SOTG learning, exchange and celebration. This year is packed with events and thus spending some time on brushing up and advancing our SOTG knowledge will make the year more rewarding for all!”
iSOTGDay is a great opportunity to celebrate SOTG, and to recruit young or new players to the sport, engage with communities outside of Flying Disc sports, and to engage with brands. Some things you could organise are:
- Award an SOTG award to a person, team or organisation based on your own criteria
- Post and discuss about your #SpiritBeyondSports experience on social media
- Host events, games or try out other disc disciplines
- Add Spirit to your discs by decorating and posting on social media
- Trial new rules in a casual game to address your SOTG challenges, reflect and share your experience
For more ideas, you can have a look at our iSOTGDay Planning Sheet. No matter how you end up celebrating, share SOTG through word-of-mouth, social media (#iSOTGDay, #SpiritBeyondSports and mention us via @wfdf_sotg_comm) or other traditional media channels.
