The first day of competition at the WFDF 2026 World Junior Ultimate Championships (WJUC) delivered an exciting start in Logroño, Spain, with 47 national teams from 26 countries competing across the Open, Women’s, and Mixed divisions. More than 1,200 participants have gathered for eight days of international junior Ultimate.

After the opening rounds, teams came together for the Parade of Nations and Opening Ceremony before the showcase Mixed Division game between hosts Spain and Mexico, officially celebrating the start of the championship and the international spirit of Flying Disc sports.

Women’s Division: Champions and Top Seeds Begin Strongly

The Women’s Division got underway with several impressive performances. Defending champions France (3) opened their campaign with victories over Spain (13) and Great Britain (12), while top seeds Italy (1) defeated Spain (13) 13–0 in their opening match.

Czechia (7) earned an important 11–7 win over Colombia (9), New Zealand (5) edged Great Britain (12) in one of the day’s closest games, 12–11, and Japan (6) opened Pool B with a 13–3 victory over Germany (11). With only two pools in the division, every result carries added significance as teams look to secure the strongest possible position before the knockout stages.

Mixed Division: Early Favorites Set the Pace

The Mixed Division opened with several strong performances from the tournament’s highest-seeded teams. Canada (2) delivered one of the standout results of the day with a 13–4 victory over Colombia (6) in the featured streamed match, while Switzerland (7) defeated China (10) 13–9 and Singapore (4) opened with a 12–6 win against Hong Kong China (13). France (5) also began strongly, defeating Austria (12) 13–5.

Open Division: Strong Starts Across the Pools

Defending champions USA (1) defeated Singapore (11) 13–4, while Italy (2) earned a convincing 13–3 victory over South Africa (17). Canada (3) overcame New Zealand (8) 13–5, Czechia (9) defeated the Netherlands (18) 13–0, and Germany (4) opened with a 13–0 win against hosts Spain (19).

Japan (5) also started strongly with a 13–1 victory over Finland (15), while Colombia (10) defeated Ireland (16) 13–1. A competitive game in Pool B saw Israel (14) come from behind to beat Great Britain (12) 13-6

Opening Game: Mexico Claims Showcase Victory

The championship’s official showcase game brought an exciting conclusion to the Opening Ceremony, as Mexico defeated hosts Spain 13–11 in front of spectators at the stadium in Logroño.

Both teams delivered an entertaining, high-level contest that reflected the competitive spirit of the championship, with Mexico pulling away late to secure the victory. The match capped off a memorable opening day, celebrating the start of a week that will showcase the world’s best junior Ultimate athletes.

With the Opening Ceremony complete and the first results now on the board, attention turns to another full day of competition on Sunday as teams continue their pursuit of the 2026 World Junior Ultimate Championship titles.
