New evidence-based online microlearning course equips coaches to build supportive team environments and keep girls in Flying Disc Sports.

Following the integration of the Coaching HER® initiative in January 2026, the World Flying Disc Federation has announced the addition of the “Caring Climate” course to WFDF Academy.

Aimed at helping coaches intentionally build team environments where girls feel cared about and safe to make mistakes, the course is a key part of WFDF’s strategy to support youth development and gender equality.

The course, offered through six modules, translates research into practical coaching strategies to create cultures where girls thrive.

Coaches will learn how to build trust, create psychologically safe team environments, and recognize effort rather than just performance. At the end of the course, coaches will have the practical tools to foster mutual kindness and respect among athletes, which boosts enjoyment and confidence.

Developed by leading researchers Dr. Candace Hogue, Dr. Lori Gano-Overway, and Dr. Mary Fry, the course highlights research showing that athletes in caring environments experience lower stress and depression, higher motivation, and a stronger sense of belonging.

“WFDF is committed to supporting our community from the grassroots up. Our goal is to equip our coaches with the knowledge and tools they need to make sure every young woman feels valued as part of the team,” said Dillon Richardson, WFDF Director of Membership Services and Sport Development. “Research shows that when girls feel encouraged to improve and safe to make mistakes, they are much more likely to stay in the sport. This course strengthens our ability to make Flying Disc Sports welcoming for everyone.”

Commenting on the impact of these strategies, coach Carlina Velasquez of Mexico shared, “Since taking the course, my coaching has become much more intentional and reflective. I am more aware of the emotional environment I create, not just the technical aspects of training. I now prioritize psychological safety, clear communication, and positive reinforcement.”

Coach Hannah Millard of Great Britain is also seeing the benefits of focusing on the person, rather than just the player: “I have added physical, emotional, and mental check-ins with my players before training. I’m adapting my coaching to best suit the group I’m working with—not just focusing on their skill level, but on their overall well-being.”

The interactive course is free, offers a certificate of completion and is available to coaches across all levels of Flying Disc Sports.

By providing evidence-based resources, WFDF aims to increase the likelihood of girls staying in sport long-term.

The “Caring Climate” course can be accessed now through the WFDF Academy at academy.wfdf.sport
