Colombian athlete and educator brings extensive multi-discipline experience and a focus on community development to the international federation.
The World Flying Disc Federation has announced Maria Fernanda “Mafer” Meza Bonilla of Colombia as the winner of the single open position representing Other Disciplines (other than Ultimate and Disc Golf) on the Athletes’ Commission. This development represents a significant milestone in integrating diverse athlete perspectives to support the inclusive growth and development of all flying disc sports.
“The Athletes’ Commission is the heartbeat of our federation, ensuring that the voices of those on the field are heard at the highest levels of governance,” said Robert “Nob” Rauch, WFDF President. “Mafer brings a cross disciplinary perspective to the Commission as well a clear understanding of the opportunities and challenges of growing disc sports in Latin America.”
Meza Bonilla, who also serves as a WFDF board member in her role as Freestyle Committee Chair, brings over 12 years of experience as an Ultimate player, alongside three years of active involvement in Disc Golf and Freestyle. In her competitive career, she achieved national recognition as a Disc Golf Interleague Champion and earned the Spirit of the Game award at the 2023 World Freestyle Championship. Beyond competition, she serves as the Director of “Vuelo Colectivo,” a national initiative focused on the development and promotion of Freestyle. Her professional background as a licensed English teacher with a Master’s degree in Pedagogical Mediation provides her with a strong foundation in inclusive teaching practices, equity, and engagement.
“I want to help share the best parts of WFDF’s values to the other flying disc disciplines and vice versa,” said Meza Bonilla. “The concept of Spirit of the Game is integral to flying disc sports, but how it is applied to the various flying disc disciplines may require more input from the relevant sport’s athletes and stakeholders.”
The Athletes’ Commission serves as a vital bridge between the international governing body and the athletes themselves, offering advice and feedback on issues ranging from health and safety to the evolution of the Spirit of the Game. The commission features ten elected members, including one dedicated position for athletes from the Freestyle, Guts, and Overall communities.
