The new guidelines promote inclusivity and gender equality across all Flying Disc Sports communications.

The World Flying Disc Federation has officially published its new Language and Portrayal Policy, a comprehensive framework designed to ensure fair, equitable, and respectful representation of all participants across official communications, media platforms and digital channels.

Recently approved by the WFDF Board of Directors and drafted by the Gender, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Commission, the new guidelines provide clear, practical advice for media professionals, event organizers, commentators, and National Federations.

“Flying Disc Sports are built on respect, inclusion and the Spirit of the Game, bringing together people of diverse backgrounds to form lifelong friendships, camaraderie, teamwork and loyalty that transcends cultural, geographic, political, and religious differences,” said Esther Omuseni, WFDF GEDI Commission Chair. “The launch and adoption of the WFDF Language and portrayal policy reflects the commitment by WFDF to fostering a culture where everyone feels respected, valued and represented. This will help remove barriers to participation, promote equity across all levels of sport and ensure that all communications reflect the diversity of our global community, regardless of race, color, religion, ability, national origin, ethnicity, gender, age and sexual orientation.”

This policy directly supports the WFDF Strategic Plan and its objective to “ensure that language is considered at all levels of communication within WFDF.” It serves as a vital component of the federation’s broader commitment to athlete well-being, gender equality, and diversity in all aspects of the sport.

By establishing clear standards for language usage, imagery, and content framing, WFDF aims to eliminate unconscious bias and ensure balanced coverage. These guidelines shift the focus toward the athletic achievements, technical skills, and Spirit of the Game demonstrated by all competitors, regardless of gender identity or background.

Following the precedent set by the IOC and other international federations that have recently modernized their portrayal standards, this document is about more than just words and images. It is about fostering a culture of equity that reflects the true diversity of the global Flying Disc community and breaks down historical stereotypes in sports reporting.

Moving forward, the principles outlined in this document must be actively considered and implemented in all WFDF-related communications, helping to inspire the next generation of participants worldwide.
