Five gold medallists from five different nations were crowned champions at the World Flying Disc Federation 2023 Asia Oceanic Ultimate and Guts Championships (AOUGC), which concluded on 10 September in Manila, Philippines. Teams from 15 countries competed at this continental championship event, with 44 Ultimate teams and 5 Guts teams playing in five divisions.
“We were excited to see such a broad level of interest in these Continental championships,” stated WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “With our World Ultimate Championships along with the Guts Championship next year in Australia, this event tees up a what promises to be a very strong showing by countries in the region.”
In the Mixed division, Mānuka from New Zealand made their country’s WFDF Finals debut and defeated Australia Mixed with a final score of 15-11. UB7, from Indonesia, won the top Spirit prize.
In the Women’s division, Australia faced off against Japan in a rematch of the AOUGC 2019 final. This time, Australia came out on top, defeating the Japanese side with a final score of 11-10. The Japan team took home both the silver medal and the Spirit award.
In the Open division, it was a battle of the undefeated sides as the Philippines Open team bested Australia with a final score of 15-12. The Disc Knights from Singapore were named the Spirit Winner.
In the Master Mixed division, a division contested for the first time at AOUGC this year, Singapore’s Vintage beat the Philippines’ South Team Durian with a final score of 14-13. The masters team from the People’s Republic of China was named the Spirit Winner.
In the Guts division, Japan defended their AOUGC 2019 gold medal by defeating Chinese Taipei, with a final score of 23-21.
“AOUGC 2023 was one of the most diverse regional events WFDF has ever held, and the results show the increased level of competition in the area. As the sport continues to flourish, we eagerly look forward to a larger and more hotly contested tournament in 2025,” said Brian Gisel, WFDF Vice President and Ultimate Committee Chair.
